Aikido

I had my very first Aikido lesson today--who'd've thought that such a Japanese art would have worked its way into Western Kansas? It was a great class. The teacher is one of the geosciences profs, which is kind of entertaining--he's technically my boss in the computer lab, even.

Aikido actually reminded me more of the fencing I've been doing with Andrew and company than the Sabre club did, in some ways. Lots of warming up and stretching, for one thing. The main difference being that in fencing there's an aggressive component that's nearly absent in Aikido.

I was really excited to discover that I already knew a lot of what Rich was talking about, though, in terms of moving from one's center, in terms of extending one's energy, and even the elusive 'intention' that I've discussed so intensely with Andrew and Jenn.

I'm sure I'll be going back. Perhaps I'll wait and see whether or not I can maintain two martial arts plus my schoolwork, labwork and research--and still have a breather for a miniscule social life. If I can't... as depressing as it is, I think I'd rather pursue this new activity than stick with fencing in the style it's offered in here. I'll see how it goes.
